Most open-movement watches reveal the mechanism as theatre.
The bridges are gilded. The rotor is engraved with the brand name. The movement is dressed for the photograph. Der Kaliber does none of this. The movement is exposed because it is worth examining — because the decisions made in its architecture reflect a standard that a closed caseback would simply hide from the people who deserve to see it. This is an instrument for the collector who reads calibre specifications the way an engineer reads a stress analysis.
Hand-wound. No rotor.
A rotor introduces vibration. A rotor adds weight asymmetry. A rotor is a compromise made for convenience. The Kaliber does not make this compromise. The collector winds it once a day. In doing so, he engages with the mechanism in a way that no automatic movement permits.
Frequency: 21,600 vph — deliberately lower than modern standards. At lower frequencies, each beat is slower. More deliberate. The escapement operates with greater authority. The amplitude is higher. The positional variation is lower. This is not a technical limitation. It is a technical choice.
38 mm. The smallest case in the Furtwängler range.
Material: Grade 5 titanium (standard) or white gold (ultra-limited, first 8 pieces). Thickness: 8.8 mm — the flattest watch in the range. The case is open at the dial side and the caseback — both sides expose the movement through sapphire. The movement IS the dial. There is no traditional dial. There is a movement, and through it, the architecture of time.
The edition number is engraved on the white gold ring between the case and the crystal: 01/88 through 88/88.
Restraint, applied with intent.
The Hands
White gold-coated blued steel. Extremely thin. The hour hand carries a single lume dot — the only lume application in the Furtwängler range, and the only concession to utility on a watch that is otherwise entirely about the mechanism.
The Typography
FURTWÄNGLER appears once. Engraved on the movement bridge visible through the dial side. Not printed. Engraved. 0.6 mm type height. You need to know where to look.
